Etwa 5200 Menschen wohnen im selbstorganisierten Camp („Forum“) in Calais, das oft als „Jungle“ Schlagzeilen machte. Die Unterkünfte sind selbst gebaut, Läden und Restaurants von Geflüchteten betrieben. Es gibt keine Heizungen, Essen und Kleidung kommt von Freiwilligenorganisationen und bei Regen versinken die Wege im tiefen Schlamm und Müll. Das Handeln der französischen Regierenden beschränkt sich auf gewaltsames Sichern der Grenze nach England und gelegentlichem Abreißen von Gebäuden im Rahmen von Vertreibungsaktionen. Täglich schafft der unbezahlte Einsatz vieler Menschen eine Versorgung mit dem nötigsten zu erreichen. Einer von ihnen ist Zimako, Gründer und Organisator einer Schule im Forum und selbst geflüchtet aus Nigeria. Im Vortrag geht es um die politische Situation für Geflüchtete in Calais und um persönliche Erfahrungen aus der Arbeit im Camp sowie um die Freiwilligen-Netzwerke und Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten.

Die Veranstaltung wird auf Deutsch und Englisch stattfinden, es wird für beide Sprachen Flüsterübersetzungen in kleinen Gruppen geben.

About 5200 people live in the self organised Camp (“Forum”) in Calais, often called “Jungle” in the news. The shelters are self-built, shops and restaurants run by refugees. There are no radiators, food and clothes are coming from NGOs and if it rains, the streets turn to moats of mud. The French government's strategy seems restricted to violently securing the border and occasionally tearing down houses during evictions. Every day the unpaid commitment of many volunteers makes it possible to provide the bare necessities for the people. One of them is Zimako, founder and organiser of a school in the forum and himself refugee from Nigeria. The talk is about the political situation for refugees in Calais, about personal experiences from volunteering in the camp and also about the NGO network and possibilities to support.

The event will be in German and English, we will provide translation to both languages in small groups.
